On 4th September 2022, Ex Tata Sons Chairman Cyrus Mistry died in a car accident near Mumbai, and with further investigation reports later revealed that he was not wearing a seat belts in the rear seats.

The 54-year-old former Tata Sons chairman and his co-passenger Jahangir Pandole, both killed in the car crash, were seated at the back seat and not wearing a seat belt. The autopsies of Mistry and Pandole revealed that they died of ‘severe head trauma and multiple external and internal injuries to vital organs’.

Union minister Mr Nitin Gadkari said on Tuesday 06th September 2022 that from now onwards wearing seat belts would be mandatory for all passengers in a car, including those on rear seats, and flouting the rule will attract penalty.

 The announcement was made only two days after from the date of incident reported.While the minister did not specify the quantum of fine on defaulters, he said seat belts, just like the installation of airbags for all passengers, would be mandatory for all categories of cars. It is worth mentioning here that at least 90 per cent of the vehicles running on Indian roads do not come with six airbags and this key feature is just limited to high-end vehicles.

This was all welcome in a fury to accept the things of loss of visionary and rules with a stance to make it mandatory rollout .

The Union minister said that a fine already is in place for those not wearing the seat belt while on the front seats. However, the new rule will impose a penalty on for not fastening the belt even if passengers are sitting on the rear (backside) seats in a vehicle.

India tops the list in the world in terms of road accidents. Prior to the pandemic, there was one deadly road crash in India every four minutes, equal to 11 per cent of all crash-related deaths globally.

Last year, 150,000 people were killed in nearly 500,000 road accidents in the country.
